Attorney

If you have need of an attorney, hopefully it's for civil and not criminal reasons. However, whatever your need by way of legal representation, you want to choose this person or firm very wisely. In criminal cases of course it can mean your freedom or hefty fines, and in civil cases it can mean having a business that complies with laws rather than violates them.

But often the choice for an attorney can be overwhelming, since there are often so many available. Some simply go online and do a quick search, and choose the first name they see. However, you might want to think about a few quick tips for choosing the right lawyer or law firm for you before you go that route.

Specialty

Like doctors, lawyers have specialties when it comes to their practice. If your need for legal counsel deals with immigration, you don't want an attorney that specializes in banking laws. If yours is a criminal case, you don't want a lawyer or law firm that has never handled criminal cases even if they are well known in the legal industry.

Of course there is much latitude within the specialties of an attorney. One that specializes in banking may handle mergers as well as financial regulatory law and project development or finance. It's good to ask your potential lawyer about the specifics of your case to see if this is something he or she has handled in the past and can advise you adequately.

Past Experience

The past experience of any potential attorney will be important when making your decision about representation. There is a huge difference between knowing the law and being able to apply it in a courtroom setting or during negotiations and other meetings. Only by having real, hands-on experience will a lawyer be able to argue your case effectively or represent your business interests effectively as well.

There is nothing wrong with asking a potential attorney about his or her past experience. How long have they been practicing, how many business firms have they represented, how many criminal cases have they argued? These questions are standard and there's no reason to hesitate in asking potential lawyers or law firms about these things.

Of course you may see that an attorney or a law firm freely advertises these facts on their websites or brochures. They may state their years of experience or cases they've argued, or other business firms they represent. Typically you don't need to do much digging to find out the necessary information.

There are many things that would recommend an attorney for you and these are just a few. There's no reason to settle for someone with whom you don't feel comfortable, or whom you don't feel has enough experience. If necessary, take some time to shop around and interview a few lawyers and law firms so that you know you're making the right choice and will have someone that will represent your best interests.
